Maurice O’Brien struggles with the transition from boyhood to manhood in Ireland in the 1830’s. The ancient clan feudal system of land tenure, a strict Roman Catholic upbringing and the harsh restrictions of British rule is making things worse.
Getting into trouble with the church or his family or the British authorities is inevitable. Flirting with the youngest daughter of the local landlord makes matters even more confusing and difficult. Maurice has already lost a brother to transportation to the penal colony of New South Wales and he will be lucky to escape the same fate.
An altercation with a young midshipman of the British Navy brings everything to a head and sets him on a journey to a new life of wild and dangerous adventure.
The first novel in a series called based on the true stories of many people from Ireland (and other british isles) who were convicted of crimes and transported to the continent now known as Australia to serve their sentence in the early 1800’s. It is a cruel punishment that leads many to desperate measures to survive.
Tom O’Connor is a historian and writer specialising in Maori history and topics.
